Remember:
Denotation means dictionary definition. (Think of the d's)
Connotation is the emotional suggestion associated with the word.
Keep in mind that some words have positive connotation, neutral connotation, and negative connotation.
You must always keep your audience in mind.

Try this exercise:
Replace each underlined word with a word(s) that do not have a negative connotation.
The angry teacher stomped into the lazy principal's office and demanded her attention.
As the principal approached, she glared at the rude teacher.
"I kicked the ruffian out of my classroom yesterday," he barked.
"The deliquent returned today gloating in front of the entire class of clowns,"
he screamed in a loud voice.
"What are you going to do about it?" he shouted belligerently.
The principal frowned and quickly took out a notepad.
The teacher bolted from the office.
